Service and philanthropy are important to every member of
Kappa Alpha Theta. Every semester,
Thetas join together to participate in events which have included
packing medical supplies to send to an orphanage in Zimbabwe,
walking in the annual Relay for Life to benefit cancer research,
and giving blood. As members of not only Theta but of the
Cal Greek community, we understand the importance of supporting
other Greek organizations' community service endeavors. Thetas
have participated in or attended various philanthropy events
such as Sigma Chi's Derby Days, Beta Theta Pi's Beta Bowl,
and Alpha Chi Omega's Runway to name a few.
|
Omega Thetas regularly participate in
Cal Greeks' annual "Trick or Greek" event.
Children from local schools come trick or treating at
houses in the Greek community, including the Theta house.
The children also take part in a special Halloween themed
activity at each house. It was a lot of fun to see the
smiles on their faces as we helped make their Halloween
a little more special.

Saturday October 27, 2007, Thetas
woke up bright and early to volunteer in Berkeley Project
2007, a full day community service event. We traveled
to the Berkeley hills and cleared French Broom, a main
fuel for forest fires. Albeit steep climbs and sore
muscles, Thetas made a huge difference and may have
saved dozens of homes in the hills community.

CASA and Theta Dodgeball
|
|
CASA
CASA, Court App ointed
Special Advocates, was founded
in Seattle, Washington in 1977 by Superior Court Judge David
Soukup. Judge Soukup, who was concerned about trying to make
decisions on behalf of abused and neglected children without
enough information, conceived the idea of appointing community
volunteers to speak for the best interests of the children
when they were in court. Today, CASA continues to support
and promote court appointed volunteer advocacy for abused
and neglected children so that they can live in safe, permanent
homes.

Theta Dodgeball
Kappa Alpha Theta is happy to support CASA. In 2008 we held
our very first Dodgeball Tournament to raise money for CASA.
The event took place on Sunday, April 27 in the RSF Field
House. We recruited 24 teams of 6-8 players from the Greek
community as well as the general campus community. The event
featured free food, a DJ, a raffle with some generous donated
prizes, and of course the entertainment of watching the teams
compete at dodgeball.
Teams raised money (at least $80 per team), and we also sold
entrance tickets and raffle tickets at the door.
We raised a total of $4, 256.82. All proceeds went towards
helping neglected and abused children in the court system.
Congratulations to all the winners!
1st place - Sigma Chi
2nd place - Alpha Tau Omega
Most spectators - Alpha Chi Omega "Ninja Turtles"
Money Wars champions - Sigma Alpha Mu
Thank you to all participants and spectators! The tournament
was a ton of fun and for a great cause. We can't wait until
next year's tournament, and we hope to see you there!
